Extensions or strengthening: which one do you need?

I hear this question almost every day. “Alina, do I need extensions or is strengthening enough?” And the answer almost never depends on trends. It depends on the state of your nails right now and on how you live. So let us settle it calmly: extensions or strengthening for your hands.

Extensions or strengthening: the short answer

Extensions or strengthening is decided by the state of your nails and how often you can come in, not by trends. Both options are covered below.

The terms first

Strengthening means working on your own nail plate. I apply a denser base or a gel and build a thin but solid layer that holds the shape and stops the nail from bending and breaking. The length stays yours.

Extensions mean building a new length and a new shape — on a form or on upper forms (tips, dual forms). There is more material, the architecture is more demanding, and that is exactly why this work takes longer to learn properly.

Two different jobs. Not “cheaper or more expensive”, not “better or worse”.

Extensions or strengthening: two gel forms side by side

When I recommend strengthening

  • Your nails grow normally but are thin and bend at the free edge.
  • You are happy with your length — you just want the colour to last and the edge not to chip.
  • You use your hands a lot: keyboard, water, household chemicals, the gym.
  • You are coming back after a long break and want to grow your own nails out calmly.

Strengthening is not the “weaker option”. A properly built apex on your own plate handles load just as well as short extensions.

When extensions are the answer

  • You want length you do not have, and you want it now.
  • Your nails grow unevenly: one plate wider, another narrower, a short bed, an edge that fans out.
  • You bite your nails or pick your cuticles — here extensions also work as a physical barrier.
  • You need a specific shape for an occasion: a wedding, a shoot, a holiday.

“Extensions ruin your nails” — let's take that apart

The material does not ruin nails. What ruins them is:

  • filing with the e-file down to pain and to a paper-thin plate;
  • peeling the product off instead of removing it with a bit or soaking it;
  • wearing the same set for two months with no infill;
  • too much length on a weak nail bed — the leverage breaks the nail in the growth zone.

When the work is done carefully and the infill happens on time, there is a normal, healthy nail under the product. I remove extensions from clients who have worn them for years, and the plate underneath is fine.

What actually decides it

Not the shape and not the colour you have in mind. Three questions:

  1. How often can you come in? Extensions mean an infill every 3–4 weeks. Strengthening needs renewing too, but being a week late costs you less.
  2. What do your hands do every day? A long almond and gardening is a conflict the garden always wins.
  3. What condition is the plate in now? After a home peel-off or a bad removal, I bring the nails back to normal first, and only then we talk about length.

How this goes at the appointment

I look at your hands, ask those same three questions and tell you plainly what I see. If strengthening is enough, I will say strengthening is enough — even if you booked extensions. I am not after a pretty result that lasts a week. I am after you coming back, with hands that still look good a year from now.

Not sure which one you need? Come in and we will work it out together. You are not supposed to know — that is my job, not yours.
