How to prepare for your first visit to a nail tech
A first visit to a new nail tech is always a little nerve-racking. On both sides, actually. Here is how to get ready for your first nail appointment so we are both happy with the result.
Every time, I want to do good work for someone I am meeting for the first time and whose nails I know nothing about yet. So a few things from your side help enormously.
Your first nail appointment: the short version
To prepare for your first nail appointment you need three things: do not peel off the old product, do not do your own manicure the night before, and arrive with no oil on your hands.
What not to do the day before
Don’t peel off your old coating. This is the big one. The top layer of the nail plate comes off with it, and for the next few weeks the nail behaves unpredictably. Come as you are — removing it properly takes fifteen minutes.
Don’t do a home manicure “to tidy things up”. I need to see what the skin is actually like. Cuticles trimmed the night before hide that picture.
Don’t apply oil or rich cream right before the appointment. Everything has to be degreased before coating anyway, and excess oil only gets in the way.

What to bring
Nothing. Really.
If you have a colour in mind, bring a photo. Not to copy it exactly, but so I understand which shade you mean. “Soft pink” means something different to everyone.
What I’ll ask — and what’s worth telling me
- What you do with your hands. Dishes without gloves, the gym, working with paper — it all affects durability.
- Whether you’ve ever reacted to materials. Even if you aren’t sure, say so.
- How long your last coating lasted and where it started lifting. That is the single most useful thing you can tell me.
- Whether you take anything that affects your nails. Not an interrogation — I just want to know what to expect from the plate.
How long it takes
A first visit is almost always longer than the ones that follow. There is looking, working things out, and sometimes correcting what the previous coating left behind.
Allow about two hours for a manicure with coating. Next time will be quicker.
And the main thing
Speak up.
If you’re uncomfortable, say so. If the shape isn’t what you pictured, say it straight away, not after the coating. If something feels unpleasant, say it that same second.
A silent client who then doesn’t come back is the worst outcome for both of us. I never find out what went wrong, and you leave thinking “well, it’s fine, I suppose”.
A good nail tech won’t be offended. She’ll be glad, because now she knows how to do better. ❤️
